林書豪表示，從沒想過自己有天會對髮型考慮那麼多，起初他還很吃驚為何大家那麼關注他弄了什麼髮型，因為幾年前開始這麼做的時候，只是想和幾個親友一起做有趣的事，並認為這是種自由表現。
起初林書豪並沒想過要將髮型，變成一個非常有意義的事，只是順其自然地去做。現在回顧一切，他可以理解為何自己的髮型那麼引人注意，而他也喜歡這個過程，讓他做自己。
自從林書豪打出「林來瘋」後，曾一度太在意外界的看法，認為他應該做什麼或不應該做什麼，但弄頭髮卻是一種簡單，可以帶領他脫離外界的控制，更加自由的方法。
在林書豪變髮的過程中，許多人會對此表達觀點，有些人可能會不喜歡他的髮型，甚至質疑他的判斷力。林書豪表示，其中意見最大的就是他的媽媽，還記得有一次，他綁了雙馬尾，藉機測試自己能否通過外界的批評。
或許在這起事件中，林書豪綁雙馬尾的舉動，可能像是在引人注意，但他能夠理解，那怕這不是他的真實動機。他表示，別人取笑他，一點也不在意，因為這就達到了他的目的，做自己，不管別人怎麼說。
但這次新造型，林書豪卻不像以前一樣，勇敢做自己，因為涉及他人文化問題，而格外謹慎；最終經過多次考慮，及詢問一些人的意見後，決定那麼做，並期盼透過此事，眾人能多點同理、少點批判，互相溝通交流。
林書豪表示，這件事情他可能是錯的，或許有一天回顧一切，他會嘲笑自己，但現在他沒有答案，並希望透過眾人的想法，了解更多；同時強調不想因為自己的變髮，讓他人的文化遭到誤解。
